Science Studies Program Lecture
Series in Science and Society
Presents Gov. Ted Kulongoski of
Oregon on March 15
The
UCSD Science Studies Program is pleased to announce that Governor Ted
Kulongoski of Oregon will speak at UCSD on Thursday, March 15 at 12:30pm at the
IR/PS Robinson Auditorium. Governor Kulongoski will be the inaugural speaker of
the Science Studies Program Lecture Series in Science and Society and will address how scientific knowledge can be put
to use in developing sound environmental policy, and how states are taking the
lead on this issue.
Governor Ted
Kulongoski has been at the forefront of state-based environmental legislation
based on scientific understanding.
As a member of the Oregon State Senate in the 1980s, he led the first
state-based law to ban the use of the chemicals that were creating the ozone
hole. In June 2003, the Governor issued an Executive Order on Sustainability
directing state agencies to incorporate sustainability into their
decision-making and strategic planning.
The Governor has directed his Sustainability Board to develop
cooperative programs with government, non-profit entities and private industry
to achieve sustainable objectives. The Governor is also working with his
sustainability advisor to develop a renewable energy plan for the state and to
coordinate OregonŐs participation in the West Coast Global Warming Initiative.
The West Coast Global Warming Initiative, which includes Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
of California and Governor Chris Gregoire of Washington, commits the three west
coast states to major reductions in the greenhouse gas emissions responsible
for global warming.
The
Science Studies Program Lecture Series in Science and Society is made possible
by a generous gift from a committed member of the UCSD community.
